The knitted ribbed slit shawl measures 18 (22, 26)” x 65 (75, 85)”

For this free knitting pattern you will need: RED HEART “Soft Yarn”: 3 (4, 5) skeins 4608 Wine.

Circular Knitting Needles: 5 milimeters [US 8] 24” long. Knitting Needles: 5 milimeters [US 8]. Crochet hook, 40” length of contrasting color waste yarn.

GAUGE: 20 stitches = 4”; 24 rows = 4” in knit3, purl2 rib. CHECK
YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.
Special Abbreviation
Slip 1p: Slip one stitch purlwise.

NOTES
Shawl is worked back and forth in rows. Circular needles
are used to accommodate large number of stitches.
Contrasting yarn is used as a marker for placement of slit.
Use as a guide when picking up stitches to make slit.

Knitting Pattern Ribbed Slit Shawl Instructions

SHAWL

With circular needles, cast on 90 (110, 130) stitches.

Row 1 (wrong side): Slip 1p, purl3, knit2, * purl3, knit2; repeat from * to last 4 stitches, purl3, slip 1p.

Row 2: Knit4, purl2, * knit3, purl2; repeat from * to last 4 stitches, knit4. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until shawl measures 5 (7, 9)” from beginning, ending with a wrong side row.

Place marker for slit

Next Row: Keeping in pattern, work across first 36 (46, 56) stitches; holding contrasting yarn and working yarn together, work across next 23 stitches, drop contrasting yarn and work to end of row. Continue in working yarn and pattern as established until shawl measures 11 (14, 17)” from beginning, ending with a wrong side row. Cut yarn.

Slit

With crochet hook, and using contrasting yarn as a guide,hold yarn to wrong side of work and pull 1 st through the center of each of 23 stitches marked for slit. Place stitches on straight knitting needle, and attach yarn to right side–23 stitches.

Row 1 (right side): * Knit3, purl2; repeat from * to last 3 stitches, knit3.

Row 2: * Purl3, knit2; repeat from * to last 3 stitches, purl3. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until slit measures 6 (7, 8)”, ending with a wrong side row. Cut yarn.

Join Slit to Shawl

Attach yarn to right side of stitches waiting on circular needle for shawl, keeping in pattern, work across first 36 (46, 56) stitches; holding needles parallel with each other so that needle holding slit stitches is in front of needle holding shawl stitches, work the first stitches from each needle together until all 23 stitches of slit have been worked, continue across remaining 31 (41 51) stitches of shawl–90 (110, 130) stitches.

Work in pattern as established until shawl measures 65 (75, 85)” from beginning, ending with a wrong side row.

FINISHING

Weave in yarn ends. Remove contrasting yarn.
