Snow Gear Knitting Pattern

Snow gear knitting pattern designs by Marilyn Coleman and Gayle Bunn. Hat and Mitten directions are for children 4-6 years; changes for 8-10 and 12-14 years are in parentheses.
Scarf measures 51/4″ wide x 50″ long.You will need: RED HEART “Super Saver”, Art. E300 (8 ounce/452 yard skeins) Hat: 11/2 (2, 21/2) Ounces 311 White Color A, 1/2 (1,11/2) ounces 319 Cherry Red Color B and 1/2 ounce 387 Soft Navy Color C. Scarf: 31/2 Ounces Color B. Mittens: 11/2 (13/4, 2) Ounces Color B and 1/2 ounce each Color A and Color B.
Knitting Needles: 4.5milimeters [US 7] and 5.5milimeters [US 9].
Stitch markers; stitch holders; yarn needle; Pom pom maker.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS:

SKP = slip 1, Knit1, pass the slipped stitch over the Knit stitch.

SK2P = slip 1, Knit 2 together, pass the slipped stitch over the Knit 2 together.

 

NOTE: Carry color not in use across wrong side of work,picking up next color to be used under color just used to prevent a hole. Join and cut colors as required.

With smaller needles and COLOR A, cast on 66 (72, 78) stitches.Work in Knit2, Purl2 ribbing for 31/2 (4, 41/2)”. Change to larger needles and work pat as follows:

Row 13: [Purl2 COLOR A, Purl2 COLOR B, Purl2 COLOR A] 11 (12, 13) times.

Row 17: With COLOR C, Purl.

Row 18: With COLOR C, Knit. Repeat Rows 1-7 once more.

Shape Top: With COLOR C, SKP, Knit28 (31, 34), Knit 3 together, place marker, KNIT 3 together, Knit27 (30, 33), Knit 3 together – 59 (65, 71) stitches. With COLOR C, Purl 1 row. Cut COLOR C. Continue with COLOR B only.

Next Row: SK2P, Knit to 3 stitches before marker, [Knit 3 together] twice, Knit to last 3 stitches, Knit 3 together. Next Row: Purl. Repeat last 2 rows 5 more times – 11 (17, 23) stitches.

Next Row: SKP (SK2P, SK2P), Knit2 (3, 6), [Knit 2 together (Knit 3 together, Knit 3 together)] twice, Knit1 (2, 5), Knit 2 together (Knit 3 together, Knit 3 together) – 7 (9, 15) stitches.

Size 12-14 Only-Next Row: Purl. Next Row: SK2P, Knit2,[Knit 3 together] twice, Knit1, Knit 3 together – (7) stitches.

All Sizes: Bind off. Sew top and back seams. Fold ribbing in half to wrong side and sew in place. Make a 2″pom pom with COLOR A and attach at top of hat.

Snow Gear Knitting Pattern Scarf And Mittens Instructions

SCARF

With larger needles, cast on 22 stitches. Marking first row as the right side, Knit 2 rows. Now work in pat as follows:

Rows 1 and 3: Knit2, [Purl2, Knit2] 5 times. Row 2: Purl2, [Knit2,Purl2] 5 times. Rows 4 and 5: Knit. Repeat Rows 1-5 until scarf measures 50″. Bind off.

MITTENS

RIGHT MITTEN: ** With smaller needles and COLOR B, cast on 26 (28, 30) stitches. Work in Knit1, Purl1 ribbing for 2 (21/2, 21/2)” increase 1 stitch on last row – 27 (29, 31) stitches. Change to larger needles and St st, begin Knit row, and work 2 (4, 4) rows while repeat 12 rows of Stripe pat (2 rows COLOR A, 6 rows COLOR B, 2 rows COLOR C, 6 rows COLOR B) throughout. **

Shape Thumb Gusset: Knit14 (15, 16), place marker, [increase in next stitch] twice, place marker, Knit to end – 29 (31, 33) stitches.Purl 1 row. Next Row: Knit to marker, increase, Knit to 1 stitch before marker, increase, Knit to end. Purl 1 row. Repeat last 2 rows until there are 33 (35, 39) stitches.

Divide for Thumb: Knit22 (23, 26); turn; put 11 (12, 13) stitches on first holder. Cast on 1 stitch; Purl 9 (9, 11); turn; put 14 (15, 16) stitches on 2nd holder. Cast on 1 stitch; Knit10 (10, 12). Work 5 (7, 9) rows even. Shape Tip: [Knit 2 together] 5 (5, 6) times. Cut yarn. Weave yarn end through remaining stitches; draw up tightly. Sew thumb seam.

Hand:With right side facing, attach yarn to last stitch on 2nd holder, pick up and Knit2 stitches at base of thumb, Knit across 11 (12, 13) stitches on first holder. Purl across all 27 (29, 31) stitches.

Work even until 4 (41/2, 5)” above ribbing, decrease 2 (0, 2) stitches on last row, end Purl row – 25 (29, 29) stitches. Shape Top: Knit1,[Knit 2 together, Knit4 (5, 5)] 4 times – 21 (25, 25) stitches. Purl 1 row. Next

Row: Knit1, [Knit 2 together, Knit3 (4, 4)] 4 times – 17 (21, 21) stitches. Purl 1 row. Next Row: Knit1, [Knit 2 together, Knit2 (3, 3)] 4 times – 13 (17,17) stitches. Purl 1 row. 2nd and 3rd Sizes Only: Knit1, [Knit 2 together,Knit(2, 2)] 4 times – (13, 13) stitches. Purl 1 row. All Sizes: Knit1,[Knit 2 together] 6 times. Cut yarn. Finish tip same as for thumb. Sew side seam.

LEFT MITTEN: Work same as right mitten from ** to **. Shape Thumb Gusset: Knit11 (12, 13), place marker, [increase] twice, place marker, Knit to end – 29 (31, 33) stitches. Purl 1 row. Next Row: Knit to marker, increase, Knit to 1 stitch before marker, increase, Knit to end. Purl 1 row. Repeat last 2 rows until there are 33 (35, 39) stitches.

Divide for Thumb: Knit19 (20, 23); turn; put 14 (15, 16) stitches on first holder. Cast on 1 stitch. Purl9 (9, 11); turn; put 11 (12, 13) stitches on 2nd holder. Cast on 1 stitch. Knit10 (10, 12). Complete same as for right mitten.
