Summer Dog Sweater Instructions

BODY
With size 6 needles and main color, cast on 45
(55 ~ 65 ~ 75) stitches. Begin with a knit row, work three rows in stockinette stitch. Change to basketweave
pattern (see box, below) and continue until work
measures 3 (4 ~ 5 ~ 6)”, ending with a Wrong Side row.

Note: If you want to adjust the length of the
sweater for a longer or shorter than average dog,
add or subtract length before leg openings.

BASKETWEAVE STITCH PATTERN

(multiple of 10 sts plus 5)
Rows 1, 3, 5 (Right Side) Knit 5, *purl 5, knit 5; repeat from * to end.
Rows 2, 4 Purl.
Rows 6, 8, 10 Knit 5, *purl 5, knit 5; repeat from * to end.
Rows 7, 9: Knit.
Rep rows 1-10 until the desired length.

LEG OPENINGS

* Next row (Right Side): Work 5 (6 ~ 6 ~ 8) stitches,
continuing in basketweave pattern, then place
remaining stitches on holder. Staying in pattern,
continue on only these 5 (6 ~ 6 ~ 8) stitches for 2 (2 ~
2½ ~ 2½)”, ending with a Right Side row. Place stitches on a
second holder and cut yarn.

Rejoin yarn and bind off the next 6 (7 ~ 8 ~ 9) sts
from the first holder for leg opening, then (continuing
in basketweave) work only next 23 (29 ~ 37 ~ 41)
stitches for 2 (2 ~ 2½ ~ 2½)”, ending with a Right Side row.

Place stitches on a third holder and cut yarn.
Rejoin yarn and bind off next 6 (7 ~ 8 ~ 9) stitches
from the first holder for leg opening. Staying in
pattern, work the remaining 5 (6 ~ 6 ~ 8) stitches for 2 (2
~ 2½ ~ 2½)”, ending with a Right Side row.
* Next row (Wrong Side): Still in a basketweave pattern,
work 5 (6 ~ 6 ~ 8) stitches from needle. Cast on 6 (7
~ 8 ~ 9) stitches. Then work 23 (29 ~ 37 ~ 41) stitches
from the third holder. Cast on 6 (7 ~ 8 ~ 9) stitches, then
work the remaining 5 (6 ~ 6 ~ 8) stitches from second
holder. Continue until the sweater measures 6 (6½ ~
8 ~ 8½)” or desired length from the beginning,
ending with the completion of the first or second set of
pattern rows

NECK SHAPING

Locate center stitch and place marker just before it.
* Beginning with a knit row, change to stockinette stitch and knit to 1
stitch before marker. Insert the right needle into the
next 2 stitches on the left needle as if you were
knitting them together and slip them to the right
needle. Knit the next stitch on the left needle. With
the left needle, pull both slipped stitches over the
stitch you have just knitted. This decreases two
stitches and creates a pretty center vertical line.

* Continue in stockinette stitch, decreasing only on Right Side, until
sweater measures approximately 7 (8 ~ 9 ~ 10)”, ending
with a Wrong Side row.

* Knit 2 additional rows without increases, then
bind off on the Right Side.

LEGS

With Right Side facing, size 5 double-pointed needles and Main Color, pick up and
knit 32 (34 ~ 40 ~ 40) stitches evenly around each leg
opening. Knit, decreasing 1 stitch on each side until
the leg is a comfortable fit for your dog.

Continue without decreases until the leg is desired length. Bind
off loosely on the Right Side.

FINISHING
* Block.
* Make flowers (see boxes on this page) and
fasten to sweater, using center buttons to anchor
and tacking down petals.
* Sew center seam and weave in all loose
threads.
* Thread a ribbon through sts at back neck, and
tie in a bow.
