Red Delicious Sweater Knitting Pattern Materials

  • 5 (5,6) skeins – “Pure and Simple” (100%silk, 260yds), Ruby Wine
  • 24″ or larger circular needle US 6
  • Crochet hook size 4 (E)
  • 2 stitch holders
  • 7(8,8) buttons for side and neck

Knitting Pattern Measurements

Bust 34, (36, 38) Small, Medium, Large.

Knitting Pattern Gauge: 6 stitches to the inch

Sleeve

Cast on 56 (62, 66) stitches and knit 3 rows in stockinette, ending with purl row.

Start Knitting Pattern

Knit 1(4,2)* Place 3 stitches on cable needle, hold in back of work, knit 3 from needle, knit 3 from cable needle; place 3 stitches on cable needle and hold in front of work, knit 3 stitches from needle, knit 3 stitches from cable needle, purl 2*. Repeat across. Purl back. Knit 6 rows in stockinette, ending with purl row. Repeat pattern until you have four cable twists (3-1/2 inches).

Continue in stockinet for 6 rows, increase 1 stitch each side. There after increase 1 st each side every 10 rows 6 times, every 4 rows 3 times (78,84,90 stitches). Continue until work measures 16-3/4 (17, 17-1/2) inches.

Shape Sleeve Cap

On knit side, bind off 4 (5, 5) stitches at the beginning of row,knit to end. Turn work, bind off 4 (4, 4) stitches purlwise,purl to end. Next 2 rows, bind off 3,4,4 stitches at beginning of each row, next 3 rows 2 stitches, next 2 rows 1 (2,2) stitch.

Knit 4 rows in stockinet without decreasing, then bind off 1 stitch at beginning of each row until 28 stitches remaining. Bind off 9 (9, 10) stitches. Make 2 sleeves.

Red Delicious Sweater Knitting Pattern Back

Cast on 112 (118,124) stitches. Knit stockinet 3 rows. Continue in pattern as for sleeve, 4 twists, purl back.

Next Row

Decrease 11 stitches evenly spaced (101,107,113 stitches). Continue in stockinet, increase 1 stitch each side every 2 inches 3 times until 11-1/2 (12, 12-1/2) inches long.

Shape Armhole

Alternate rows, at beginning, bind off 4(5, 5), 3(4, 4), 2(3,3), 1(1,1) stitches. Continue in stockinet 7, (7-127-1/4) inches for armhole. Bind off 10, 10, 9 [(10,10,10), (10,11,11)] each side. Save reminder on stitch holder.

Front

Knit same as back until armhole measures 5″. Transfer middle 11(13, 15) stitches to stitch holder.

Shape Neck

Knit each side separately. On purl side, starting at shoulder, purl to stitch holder. Turn, bind off 3 (4, 5) stitches at neck side. Knit to end. Turn, purl to end, turn bind off 2(3, 3) stitches. Continue in same manner, binding off 2, 1, 1 at each side until 29(30, 32) stitches remain. Work until front is even with back at shoulder. Bind off 10, 10, 9 [(10,10,10), (10,11,11)} stitches.

Work other side in same fashion, starting with a knit row. Facing sweater, sew left shoulder seam, sew right shoulder seam 3 inches starting at shoulder. Sew right side seam (underarm) and sew 5-1/2 inches underarm seam starting at armhole on left side.

Neckband

In front, pick up 25(28, 31) stitches from right side of neck, 11(13, 15) from stitch holder, 25(28, 31) from left side,29(33, 35) from back (90, 102, 112 stitches) and knit in pattern 3 inches (3 twists). Bind off.

Finishing crochet along open front edge, turn, make 3(4, 4) buttonholes for neck opening, crochet back for reinforcement. Crochet one row on back edge. For side opening,crochet in similar fashion but make 4 buttonholes. Fasten buttons, and sew in sleeves. If you prefer zippers, you need 2 zippers 6 inches each. Sew in zippers at side and neck openings.
